If You Want to Speed up, Slow Down
One of my favorite teachers used to say, “If you want to speed up, slow down.” And I can honestly say these are words to live by, especially when it comes to family life and the holiday season.
Sometime today, when things feel busy or hectic and you need to keep it all moving (i.e. you are leaving the house, coming back together with your people, sitting down to a meal, etc.), SLOW DOWN and
Stop – Pause whatever you are doing and be still for a few moments.
Breathe – Inhale slowly for four counts, hold for seven and exhale for eight.
Check in – Ask yourself, “How am I feeling right now? What am I noticing in my body? Where am I on the continuum between wobbly and steady?”
Allow - Allow whatever you are noticing without judgment. Let it be.
Observe your others – What’s the emotional weather of my people?
Appreciate – Notice who and what you are amidst and say thank you for something.
Intend - Consider how you want to meet the moments. You get to choose!
Remember, “If you want to speed up, slow down.” Try the tools above when you need them most.
